Born in Waddon, Croydon, Surrey, England, on June 28, 1895; died in Worthing, Sussex, England, on February 16, 1973; daughter of Walter (a seed merchant and woodcarver) and Mary Eleanor Oswald Barker; sister Dorothy (b. 1893); attended Croyden School.

The books enjoyed huge popularity due to Queen Mary 's well-known interest in fairy art. She later published seven more volumes of Flower Fairies.

Cicely Mary Barker was born in West Croydon on 28 June 1895, the second and younger daughter of Walter and Mary Eleanor Barker. Her sister Dorothy had been born two years earlier. Cicely was physically frail throughout her life, and suffered from epilepsy as a child.
